Jeremiah relayed God's instructions for Judah to surrender to the Babylonians, which disturbed four high-ranking officials. In response, they lowered him into a muddy cistern located in the courtyard of the guard. Fearing that Jeremiah would starve to death if he remained in the cistern, a man named Ebed-Melech rescued him. (Jer. 38:1-13)
